How to properly install programs in Linux?

Q. Primarily, I am trying to install OpenOffice and the Linux print drivers for my HP LaserJet 1012. I have the files downloaded from the web. I am just not having any luck getting them installed. Please provide detailed instructions, (as much as possible), as I have tried most things I have already found on linuxquestions.org and 1 or 2 other sites. It is probably something minor I am skipping.

A. You are missing three important peices of information. What type of files are they? What distribution are you using? What type of errors are you getting? With out that information I can only give you the most basic of answers.

Here are the general answers:
.RPM
RPM is a package format pioneered for RedHat. There are several program that can install them. At the command line type "rpm --install <filename>".

.TAR.GZ
Tarballs or a .tar.gz file is a compressed tar file. Usually this means it is the source code for the program. These are the basic steps and are typed at the command line:
gunzip file in a directory
run "./configure" if it is present.
run "make"
run "make install" as root

.DEB
The format was created for the Debian distribution, on which Ubuntu is based. It uses an a different program called dkpg to install software. I am not sure of the command syntax, since I use a Reh Hat based system.

Final thought
There are some programs that can convert between rpms and debs. One program called alien converts from rpms to debs. Not sure what program converts the other way, since I typically use rpms or .tar.gz files.

Remote desktop connection in redhat linux problem?
Q. I have two pc's . on one of them i have installed xp sp2 and on another system I have installed linux (redhat). Now i want to use linux to remotely connect to xp.But how tell me.

in xp it is done by enabling "remote desktop connection"

A. Well, you could try any of the following and find one that works for you.
rdesktop might work, I know it works with Windows Terminal Services haven't tried it with the native "Remote Desktop" but something tells me it may work. http://www.rdesktop.org/

Use RealVNC (or variant) It will work for remote desktop functions has a Linux and a Windows version. http://realvnc.com

There also is a couple of good ones like FreeNX http://freenx.berlios.de/
or 2X (very similar) http://www.2x.com/terminalserver/download.html

One should do you.. good luck

How do I replace Windows with Linux in a seamless fashion?
Q.

A. A couple of suggestions on getting started.
1. Most any computer store sells both RedHat and SUSE versions of Linux for pc's. Either will come with a manual and CD on how to replace Windows.
2. For free, go to http://www.knoppix.org/ and highlight the English version at the top. Read first, then download the free version of Linux they supply.
Hope this helps.

Where can i download the Ubuntu source code for windows?
Q. I would like to download the ubuntu source code for modifying on Windows Vista.
and if i make a lot of modifications could i distribute it with credit to Canonical?

A. Source code is nothing more than text, you can download it to any operating system you want including your mobile phone os.

The problems your going to have however are multiple.

1. Your understanding of what a linux distribution is seems to be confused a bit. Ubuntu is not an application but a collection of applications. It's a distribution of linux which means that ubuntu packages together a bunch of other open source packages/applications and creates the ubuntu distribution. This includes the linux kernel which is used with all linux distributions from redhat to android. Sometimes the kernel is slightly modified but usually not.
Take the gui for instance. Ubuntu's default gui/desktop implementation is gnome. Gnome itself is composed of a bunch of other applications/packages. You don't have to use gnome however you could install KDE or XFCE or LXDE. Don't get me wrong there is source code for ubuntu but it mostly consists of an installer and possibly some modifications to other packages.
I am not sure that what you really want to do is edit the ubuntu source code. What you probably want to do is add applications/packages to the ubuntu distribution.

2. You can't compile code for a linux distribution on a windows machine. And even if I am wrong about that why would you want to. You would want to compile and edit the code in the environment/OS that the code is meant to run in whenever possible. Linux is a great environment to develop in and in some cases superior to windows.

3. You can do what's called forking with most open source license, maybe all of them. You would have to read the specific license, but usually the only requirement is that you distribute the source code.

Some other input I would suggest if you have an idea for an application you should go ahead and build that application. Don't try to create a linux distribution unless you have a lot of experience on larger software development projects. Start small and grow big.

How to installing modem in Redhat 9 Linux?
Q. Please any body tell me what techniques use to install modem in redhat 9 because i download the drive of the modem also but i can not install in redhat 9 please any body tell me know some commands of installing modem through linux terminal. I am waiting your early reply . Thanks

A. Type of modem and type of driver download make a big difference.

If you have a tar-ball (driver ends in tar.gz or tgz) then you will need to type the following
tar xzvf <driver filename>
cd <dir created if one was >
./configure
make
make install (as root)

and that is very generic and not a whole lot of help with the information you gave

Where From I can download Sound and Video Player software for Linux redhat3?
Q. I have installed Redhat 3 in my computer. But it is necessery to installed extra sofware of sound and to play movie i.e video software.

A. Use your redhat package manager to install software. Look for kaffeine, mplayer, amarok.

kaffeine is a really good video player.

Amarok is a VERY nice audo player/collection manager with lots of features.

mplayer is a basic no-thrills player.

Are you talking the newer Redhat Server V3, or are you talking the REALLY OLD Redhat 3 before they split off the free stuff to Fedora?

How to install a new application in linux?
Q. Whenever i download a new program in my PClinuxOS, it shows it as a ".exe" file but doesn't open it.For example in my desktop a file lies as "AdbeRdr920_en_US.exe" but when i try to open it they ask me which application to open it with and shows a bunch of applications already installed by linux only.

A. .exe's are for windows only, they will not run natively in linux,

what program are you trying to install ?,
i guess its adobe reader - no need, you already have a pdf reader enabled

pclinuxos is built from mandriva linux, it uses rpm's as the packages,
it also uses the aptitude package management via synaptic,

(people associate synaptic and apt with ubuntu and mint, this is a error made by people who do not understand how to install or remove software from linux, you cannot use .deb packages - which are debian, you use rpm's which are redhat)

you will have a large S in your system tray, this is synaptic, click on it,
you will be asked for your ROOT password not your user password,
once open click reload
mark all upgrades and apply

once its finished you will have access to over 7000 pieces of software,

what you want will be there, just search and mark for install (and all dependancies)

i'll check back later

How do I download and install programs on linux?

Q. I have ubuntu and is new to linux. So I would like to know how to install my downloaded programs on linux.

First I download the file

Then I click open

Then it opens some window with the file in it.

I click on the file and it opens another window called open files.

Then I tryed extracting but it just brought me back to the files window.

How do I install programs on linux? Thanks

A. http://monkeyblog.org/ubuntu/installing/

Check tha above link to install program in ubuntu.

Program in linux are avaliable in many format like
1>source format (i.e. programming lanaguage), you have to complie to install it. Not for newbie like you. itis compress format like tar, .gz etc. This i think you are clicking, which open new windows to show extracted files etc.

2> .deb, .rpm format, it is format for debian or redhat linux which can installed by their package manager

3>the most easy and best method for beginner is to use ubuntu package manager, search for program , let it download and then install.

System â Administration â Synaptic Package Manager

What is the most popular form of the linux operating system today?
Q. I knew about RedHat but not sure whether that is still in service?

A. 1 Ubuntu
2 Fedora
3 openSUSE
4 Mint
5 Debian
6 Mandriva
7 PCLinuxOS
8 Puppy
9 Sabayon
10 Arch

This is the list from http://www.distrowatch.com which states the most downloaded distros out there. Granted these are just desktop distros and I expect that both Debian and RHEL (Red Hat) make up the majority of the Linux servers out there.

Q. i just got a linux xo from my friend, and i can't watch anything or do anything that involves flash....

anybody know where i can download anything to make it all better?

A. Depending on your distribution you can install flash from the repositories. You can also go to adobe for a version of flash compatible with your distribution.

Help please, i was trying to boot up Linux the centos or redhat version using a virtualbox?
Q. after i did everything and tried to install it i got an error page saying " This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU. Unable to boot- please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU." what does it mean and how do i fix it do i have to download anything somewhere? please put links if i have too. Thanks a lot i really need this Linux for this operating systems class.

A. you need to enable virtualisation support in your bios - if you have it

you cannot run 64bit o/s's in virtualbox if you do not have the support
