Unable to open Unix files within zipped archive that has ":" in the file names.?

Q. I have received some files from a vendor who has a Unix based machine, and he is sending me some files that are zipped. But within the zipped file, the inidividual file names have a colon ":", and I am unable to unzip it onto my Windows XP machine. Unless I rename the files within the zipped archive and then unzip them.... any suggestion about any application out there, that might do the trick??

Why not ask the vendor to provide you a zipfile that doesn't contain characters not supported on Microsoft Windows operating systems? While you have them renaming the files, you may also want to have them check for files that have the same name but with a different case (i.e. myfile.txt & MyFile.txt are not the same file on UNIX systems but the default Microsoft configuration does not differentiate files on case. You can change it, but even Microsoft doesn't recommend it. Apparently Microsoft doesn't think their user base is smart enough to realize runme.exe and Runme.exe are different files and they worry about the "point and click" types being exploited).

Another solution to consider, if you can't find a zip utility to rename the files inside the zip, would be to use a Linux Live CD to temporarily create a Linux environment that you can access the files from. Try using Damn Small Linux on a bootable CD/thumb drive to process the files, rename them, and transfer them to a network resources.

How to open .tar.gz files for free?
Q. I'm looking for a free program to unzip a .tar.gz file, do you know of a good one?

Thank you in advance

A. tar.zg files are compressed files like a zip files in Windows they are native to the Linux operating system. Most linux do or should at least support the option to "right click and decompress here"

how do i install linux software? I am trying to get a Java IDE, and installing as a .tar.gz.. .what do i do?
Q. any help would be great, cuz i also need adobe flash, and a whole bunch of other programs to operate my online school
I am using Ubuntu btw

A. It depends upon how the software is packaged. In general, you need to start by unzipping the file. A file that ends in .tar.gz is tarred and gzipped. Start by unzipping it. Use the command 'gunzip filename' (do a man gzip for options). This should leave you with a .tar file. Untar it by using the command 'tar -xvf filename' (again, use 'man tar' to get more options and switches). This should put the files into a new directory. Navigate to the directory and look for a readme file, which should explain how to install it.
