is it legal to download linux from the internet to install on a pc?

Q. Hi,
I was just wondering if it is legal and free to download a linux os onto my computer to burn on to a disc so that i can install it on a computer with no os loaded.
I have heard lots of stuff about linux being free but i just want to make sure.
Thanks.

A. Yes.. linux is a FREE SOURCE OS.. meaning you can download it, alter it, rape it, w/e. there is no law. ENJOY IT !!

How do you remove a Linux OS to install windows?
Q. I purchased a "used" computer from my company and it has a Linux OS on it. I would like to wipe it clean and install windows, but not sure how. Is there an easy way to do this?
I tried starting up with the windows 7 disk, in hopes it would just "over ride" the other, but no luck. The current OS is uBuntu...not sure if that makes a difference or not.

A. If you have a cd/dvd of the operating system you want, just put in on your optical drive
turn on your computer, press F8 or whatever button to change start up drive, change booth drive to your optical drive, save setting, exit and reboot.
Your computer will read your cd/dvd and will prompt you.
It will find your hard drive and ask you if you want to install it on that drive. (default C drive).
If you have a huge hard drive, you can partition your C drive to whatever size you want.
I prefer to assign only 50 Gig for drive C. Once the operating system is installed, I partition the remaining drive and use it as storage drive.
It fill format the drive and install your operating system.
Just follow the instructions of the install prompts.

If you are still having problems, use a separate computer, search for Hiren's boot cd in .iso format. Download and burn on cd/dvd. Just boot the cd in your used computer. It has a lot of partitioning programs you can choose to reformat your hard drive.

If I saved Linux on a usb, could I use it on a school computer running windows?
Q. If I downloaded Linux OS onto a USB, can I put it into a school computer and run it on there? The computers run windows as do most organisations.

A. The usb ports are probably all disabled to begin with unless the admin is an idiot.

Are there any linux os that will run on an old laptop with a Linksys wireless card?

Q. I have a few Linux OS i have tried out and none of them worked with a Linksys wifi card. Can a Linksys wireless card work with Linux or is there another OS that will work with it and work on an old computer?
I am running on a very slow and old laptop Pentium 3 with original windows 98 installed on it.

A. Find what model card you have and see if it is supported, ie google ubuntu + card model. It may simply be a matter of installing the appropriate driver from the repository.

An alternative is to install ndiswrapper, if it isn't already installed, and use the .inf file from the XP drivers for the card, which you can download from the manufacturers website.

If the machine doesn't have at least 256 meg of ram then it won't be capable of web surfing.

The lightest full system to use would be puppy. Xpud is also worth a try, it is basically just a browser and a file manager. The best choice for a polished, configurable system would be lubuntu (ubuntu with the lxde desktop).

Are there any stacker games that play on Linux OS?

Q. My 5 year old's computer runs on Linux OS. Its a Dell computer and can he download any Super Stacker games on it?

A. These seem to all be online flash games. Just install Adobe Flash on the computer (it is probably there already) and load up the page and play the games.

How do I run Windows 7 in parallel on a machine running Linux natively?
Q. I have a machine running Windows 7 right now. I want to run a Linux OS natively and have it run windows in parallel. Can I do this without re-downloading Windows?

A. They cannot run in parallel without getting TERRIBLE performance. You will have Windows and Linux fighting for the same resources, memory, and services and it will be choppy.

They use completely different file systems, meaning different partitions on your hard drive. Therefore, I believe you can only emulate the other OS and not run natively.

Your hard drive would need to have 2 independent read/write heads scanning different portions of your HDD at the same time, and they are not made to do that. They only read one area of a hard drive at any given time, so that means only one operating system at a time, espcially OS's that are so different from each other.

What Linux distribution can be installed and work properly from a 2-4gb flash drive?
Q. I have an Eee Asus 900 and the libraries for Xandros are old and I can't do as much as I'd like to on there. I'm considering downloading a different Linux OS to a flash drive but I wouldn't know which could work from there without problems.

A. You will want to go with go with;

For 2 GB
SliTaz Linux http://slitaz.org/en/
Bodhi Linux http://www.bodhilinux.com/
Puppy Linux http://puppylinux.org/main/Overview%20and%20Getting%20Started.htm

if you have 4 GB of memory, you could probably get away with installing something like Linux Mint Debian Edition http://www.linuxmint.com/ , Jupiter OS http://elementaryos.org/ , or Aurora OS http://www.auroraos.org/

I personally like Bodhi Linux when it comes to the eeepc.

Which linux os can i download which i can install with xp also?

Q. i want to download linux os from net for free.. i want to have it without removing my windows xp.. which linux version can i download and from where and i need to know everything about linux.. what is it.. and what is the best version(edit, release) u recommend me to download.

A. I would say go for the superb new Ubuntu 9.04 although still a Beta release it is outstanding.

You have two options.

First download Ubuntu 9.04 Beta http://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/9.04/ Select the top option.

Once you have downloaded the iso. create a Bootable LiveCD using Nero Burning ROM or similar software.

First option.

Ubuntu 9.04 contains a piece of software called Wubi installer on the LiveCD you have just created. With Wubi installer you can install Ubuntu within Windows.
You keep Windows as it is, Wubi only adds an extra option to boot into Ubuntu. Wubi does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.
Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Second option.

Ubuntu 9.04 can also be run straight from the LiveCD you have created without touching your Hard Drive.

What Linux os is the best one to install on a computer?
Q. For people wanting to download media files on? And are all Linux os's free or atleast the good ones? Is there any point of me putting linux on my d drive so I can switch back and fourth from windows 7 to Linux?

A. Most Linux distributions aimed at home/office users are free.
There is no "best". This test will help you decide: http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc/
As you are probably a new linux user, I would recommend ubuntu or openSUSE. It can install and configure the GRUB loader for you, which is what you need to dual-boot windows and linux, and yes, you should definitely keep your windows installation.

BTW, All distros are able to download media files, most of them able to play them straight away (I would say all, but then there is Arch and Ubuntu Server ;)).

There's really no reason to think of which distro to choose for too much, most are quite similar. The only major differences between distros are the package managing systems and the pre-installed packages. Anotherdifference is, for example, that in Ubuntu, unlike Debian, you can not su root (=login as superuser) by default. (TTheoreticallyyou can make Debian look and behave exactly like Ubuntu with some configuration work, though.)

Cheers!

A. You will want to go with go with;

For 2 GB
SliTaz Linux http://slitaz.org/en/
Bodhi Linux http://www.bodhilinux.com/
Puppy Linux http://puppylinux.org/main/Overview%20and%20Getting%20Started.htm

if you have 4 GB of memory, you could probably get away with installing something like Linux Mint Debian Edition http://www.linuxmint.com/ , Jupiter OS http://elementaryos.org/ , or Aurora OS http://www.auroraos.org/

I personally like Bodhi Linux when it comes to the eeepc.

Cheers!

Who knows how to install a Java to a Linux OS in ASUS EeePC?
Q. Who knows how to install a Java to a Linux OS in ASUS EeePC? I purchased an EeePC 4GB Surf for my programming subjects. But then, I couldn't use the Eclipse if I don't have Java installed on the pc. Do you know how to put Java in a ASUS EeePC 4GB Surf Linux OS?

A. Go to java.com and download the self extracting file. Once you get that you'll open a terminal, navigate to the folder that the java download is saved to and then type

sudo sh jre-6u5-linux.i586.bin

That's the manual way to do it and seems to work better than any other I've found. Be sure to close all of your browsers before running the sh command.
