Will all the vista tablet pc components work in XP or ubuntu?

Q. I'm using an HP Touchsmart tx2-1020us tablet pc that runs on vista 64 which it came with. I was wondering if I switched to xp or ubuntu if all off the programs for for handwriting recognition and all the other tablet pc components would still work in either one of them. Basically, I can't stand Vista but I want to keep all the tablet functionality.Thanks.

A. No, they will not work in either XP or Ubuntu.

Linux, I have heard, does have *some* tablet support apps floating around but they are nowhere as comprehensive as what is found in XP or Vista.

MS made many changes to the TabletPC apps in Vista. TabletPC components are now integrated into the Vista OS and are definitely superiors to the XP versions.

In XP, you got WinXP Pro and the TPC components were "shell" apps that ran on top of XP, external to the OS.

On a TPC Vista is definitely the OS to run. Vista is actually quite good. The problem is the third party software developers who have not cleaned up their code to run efficiently or correctly in Vista. And many 3rd party hardware manufacturers have made absolutely horrible device drivers which cause all sorts of problems. I guess that's what you get when you pay someone in Bangalore $1/hour to write your drivers...

And you state you have the 64 bit version as well. Way too many software developers have ignored the 64 bit system and stuck writing apps only for the 32 bit OS. That will be your biggest problem...

If you do want to downgrade to XP Tablet Edition you need to know that XP TE was OEM only. You cannot buy the TabletPC version of XP anywhere except from the manufacturers.

If you're a true geek you can load XP Pro and find all the required apps to create a TPC, but it's a very difficult task to do so. It's much easier to contact HP.

My suggestion would actually be to wait for Windows 7 to arrive and upgrade to it. It will fully support the multi-touch screen on the TX2 which XP will not.

What operating systems are compatible with tablet pcs?
Q. I'm looking to buy a tablet pc on ebay and figure that after i can upgrade the os. I just don't know which ones will be compatible with it.

A. The only OS's that have the complete TabletPC functionality built-in are WinXP Pro Tablet Edition and Vista. And even with these you generally have to have the proper restore disks to prevent digging around the 'net for some device drivers.

There are TabletPC's running Mac OS and Linux, but there is no "package" that loads what you need, You would have to find all the Tablet screen and pen device drivers, all the handwriting recognition software, all the internal server apps, etc yourself to "build" the TPC system.

Vista is a great OS for TPC's, but upgrading to Vista can be problematic as many machines designed to originally run XP won't have the hardware specs to run Vista well. Maxxing out your RAM will help but most TPC's do not have upgradeable video cards.

You'll probably be Ok with anything current from the last 3 - 4 years provided you don't want to run Aero effects, etc in Vista.

Whats are some differences between a laptop and a tablet?
Q. I know that a tablet is touch screen when you swivel it over, but are there any other differences? I want to know because the price difference is a lot.

A. The biggest differences between a laptop and tablet systems is that usually laptops have better speed CPU's and larger Hard drives. Now some tablet system run Window based software and others don't and you can even get a laptop with Linux.

I believe that Laptops are better designed then tablets in terms of handling you dropping them plus the usage. Because tablets for the most part touch and tap controlled you will see damage to the screen area much faster then a laptop. I think you have more flexibility with laptops as well since you add accessories much easier and software which some tablets won't run well you can use them for more things where tablets are designed more for kind of reading.

If you want to rotate your screen just buy a monitor that will allow that option which some laptops have on them.

That's some of the reason I like, hope that helps you out.

Which tablet would be best for me?

Q. I've been looking at tablets but i cant seem to be able to find the perfect one. I would like one with an SD port, USB port, Flash enabled, multi-touch screen, and able to use the app store, app world, or something with lots of apps NOT ANDROID MARKET. I personally dont like it.
Thanks
If adobe is not using flash, what are they using?

Also what about the blackberry play book?

A. Samsung Galaxy Tab meets every one of your criteria! It has a microSD slot, a USB port (proprietary plug), runs Android 2.2.1 Froyo which supports Flash (for all that's worth) and can use Amazon's Appstore for Android, which is the third largest Appstore after iTunes App Store and Android Market--MUCH bigger than BlackBerry App World-- rather than the Android Market. As a bonus, it can also use Android Market. You don't HAVE to use Android Market.

Android devices can use apps from other sources than the Android Market, though I don't see any reason to exclude it. Amazon has a nice LARGE Appstore for Android devices, and they give a different paid app away for free every day. I use the Android Market, Amazon Appstore for Android, and third party apps on my Android devices. Unlike iPad, Android devices don't need any "jailbreadking" or "rooting" to run apps from anywhere. The package manager (Android is a Linux) recognizes an .apk as an application and can install it. Android is very flexible, and gets even more flexible with root access.

What do you personally not like about the Android Market? Most people are upset with devices that DON'T use the Android Market.

Obviously, the iPad, a nice tablet, don't get me wrong, I have one and the App Store is large, doesn't use Android Market. As far as the BlackBerry Playbook goes, their big selling point is that they DO USE (or will soon) Android Market, because there are no tablet-optimized apps in the BlackBerry World, and without it the Playbook won't have any apps.

iOS depends on specialized apps for Flash sites. YouTube has a specialized site for the YouTube app and Hulu supports their app for Hulu+ on iPad. Flash video sites without support won't work, nor will MS Silverlight sites like Netflix, without that site's specialized apps. Most Flash video sites won't work on tablets anyway, even if the tablet supports Flash. Hulu, for instance, reads the browser and blocks all tablet and handheld browsers, even those which use desktop identifiers like Dolphin. Flash CANNOT be your decider, because MOST Flash isn't supported on any tablets for one reason or another.

Adobe is still pushing Flash, they still make money off of it. Google and many others are pushing standards-compliant HTML5 to enable audio/video in the browser without plugins. This is a good thing. Support HTML5. Unfortunately, Flash is not yet dead. That said, I don't miss it on my iPad, my Galaxy Tab (which supports Flash but most Flash is still blocked from the other end), my Nexus S (which supports Flash but most Flash is still blocked from the other end), or my iPod Touch.

What is the difference between the Netbook 8.4 Lcd Touch Screen and the ipad?
Q. I am trying to figure out what the difference is, so that I can decide which to get.

A. A netbook is a miniaturised laptop that contains many features of a standard laptop computer, though is of a smaller size and weight. They usually run a full-feature operating system, such as Windows 7 or a Linux distro, and behave like a normal computer. They have keyboards and trackpads, and sometimes touch-screens too. They also run quite slower than proper laptops because they have slower processors and less RAM to run with.

The Apple iPad is a tablet computer, that has no actual keyboard, no trackpad, and runs a version of Mac OS that has been optemised for their range of non-computer electronics (iOS for iPod, iPad and iPhone) and cannot run desktop applications; it needs it's own versions. That said, because it has specially built software, even with the same hardware it runs a lot faster than a netbook. The iPad also contains an accelerometer for gaming, plus a vast number of games available.

Hope I've answered your question.

Can I download regular things on a Thrive tablet?
Q. I am getting a Toshiba Thrive Tablet PC (thetoshibatablet.com) and I'm wondering, before I get it, can I download things like GIMP or Adobe Photoshop on it? And if there's anything else I should know about art/photomanipulating programs on the tablet PC?
Are there any more art/photomanipulating apps/programs FOR ANDROID TABLETS that have all the same features?

A. It's not a Tablet PC, nor is it a computer, it's an Android Tablet. It runs on Android.

GIMP runs on Windows, Mac or Linux.
Adopbe Photoshop runs on Windows or Mac.

So the answers is no, you can't get GIMP or Adobe Photoshop on an Android tablet.

Can you call a cell phone or land line with the nokia N800 Internet tablet?

Q. Can you call a cell phone or landline with the nokia internet tablet , know it is not a cell phone but it has voip and since it could do online video calling i was wondering could it call a regular phone too.
If so how do you do it and is it posssably free?

A. Since the N800 basically runs Linux with XWindows, you can run Linux applications on it. While I don't have an N800 myself, according to Wikipedia, Gizmo Project and Skype both run on the N800. Skype has the Skype Pro calling plan which costs $3/mo and allows unlimited calls to the US and Canada (provided you're in the US or Canada, determined by IP address), or unlimited calls to the country you're in plus a connect surcharge. You could also subscribe to a pay per use plan. Gizmo Project is similar, except you can sign up with Grand Central and this will give you a free US phone number and free unlimited incoming calls. Also with SIP Broker, there are local telephone gateways that will allow people around the world to call you (as a free Gizmo Project user) as a local call at no charge to you. Gizmo will call out too for similar pay per use prices as Skype, definitely much cheaper than any landline or cell. With either Skype or Gizmo, you can call toll free numbers for free. If you're in the US, you can call 1-800-GOOG-411 or 1-800-CALL-411 and have those free services look up the phone number you want to call and it will connect your call for free so in essence you can have free, nothing per month outgoing and incoming calls to/from the US.

Should I get a notebook or a tablet computer?
Q. I have enough money for (an inexpensive) one. I would really like to get as much use out of it as I can. Preferably, I'd like an operating system on it (Linux would be fine).

I would like to use it in my car, but I'm concerned that a keyboard would be cumbersome.

Can one suffice for the other, or are they different enough from each other that you really need both?

If you have both, which one do you wish you would have gotten first?

Your advice is appreciated.

A. I have a IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad X201 Tablet, i7 processor, Wacom penable touchscreen, windows 7, works okay with 8, 6GB ram, excellant battery life

Can a Wacom Bamboo Tablet plug into a HP notebook?
Q. I am getting a Wacom Bamboo Tablet soon and my Mother says she will have my laptop if it can only go into a Desktop... I google it but they didn't have the answer. any help?

A. The tablet is a USB device and as long as the OS on the notebook supports it then it will work.
The Bamboo Tablets work with XP (SP2 or above) , Vista and Windows 7 (as well as Mac OS X 10.4), so unless you are running a flavour of Linux it should work straight out of the box.

What are some cheap graphics tablets for drawing on a computer?

Q. I want reliability and cost -$50. I'm inexperienced with digital art so if you could also share what problems may arise please inform me. I use Mac and Linux, not Windows.

A. There are very few for $50 unless you find something on eBay or get one that is used and very small size. This one is around $53: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823166106&cm_re=graphic_tablet-_-23-166-106-_-Product

Q. I use photoshop a lot. Im going to college in a few months and though about getting a macbook pro, but than I came across the tablet laptops.
Would it be better to get one of those or a mac?
And also, would a table laptop run a game like WoW for when I have some free time?

A. Check up on what your school recommends. Some tracks are platform agnostic and some recommend specific things. A tablet laptop would be fine, but they're spendier and can be cumbersome. Try one out at a store before buying.

And Carling, you honestly think that Linux is a good choice for graphic design?? Yeah, come back when either the Adobe Creative Suite runs flawlessly in Linux or the world switches to GIMP. Until then, enough of your incessant rabid open-source fanboyism.

How do i use a kindle fire as a computer tablet?

Q. AI have a kindle fire 2. I am in drawing and stuff, but i really need a tablet. SO i asked one of my friends if a kindle fire can be used for a computer tablet. she said yes. I can't find anywhere with that kind of information. I need help.

A. A kindle fire uses type of linux like an android operating system. You can buy applications from Amazon and they run just like apps on a tablet. Just look for them on the kindle store.

How do I know which MP3 players can boot a linux live cd?

Q. My current mp3 player cannot be used to boot a linux distro, it seems, after a few approaches.

So, I'd like to know which MP3 players can boot a linux distro when plugged into a PC (live cd).

Even better, how can I tell that an MP3 player is bootable in this way? There seems to be no mention of this possibility in any round-up guides, or in the specs.

A. Some might be able to do micro C linux (uCLinux), but not can boot from any live CD that I know of. Some Tablets with a ARM processor can run Ubuntu, but the isntall is a bit weird. You have to root the device and then write a Ubuntu user space onto the drive, but leaver the kernel and boot loader intact.

RockBox offers OSS firmware that can run on many MP3 players, improving their functionality.

My suggestion would actually be to wait for Windows 7 to arrive and upgrade to it. It will fully support the multi-touch screen on the TX2 which XP will not.

How do I know which MP3 players can boot a linux live cd?

What is a good paint program for using a graphics/drawing tablet?
Q. So i am going to get a graphics/drawing tablet, but i need a good paint program for the computer.

is there any good programs THAT DON'T COST YOU MONEY that i could get?

A. GIMP is free and open source and supports tablets.
They have a version for Linux, Mac, and Windows.

What art programs can you use on an Android Tablet?
Q. I just got an android tablet and wanted to start doing a little more art like drawing and stuff and was wondering if I could download something like GIMP,PSE, ect.

A. You cant use GIMP and Photoshop Elements in Android tablets. You can only use them on Macs, Windows, and (for GIMP only) on Linux operating systems.

are tablet laptops good for graphic design students?
