How is Linux different from Windows?

Q. I saw a picture of the Linux desktop and the interface seemed almost identical to windows.

A. In Linux, the core operating system and the window system are separate.

Linux will run happily without the window system, and servers typically do.

The lower layer of the window system is X. This allows the interface and/or windows to be displayed across a network. The higher level part of the the window system is the window manager, and there are many choices for window managers. Different ones look, work and feel different.

In windows, you get what you get. No options, no default over-the-network functionality.

The OS kernel in Linux implements a clear separation of power between users, services and kernel. This clean(er) design leads to Linux tending to be more secure.

There is a high level of isolation between programs. One program crashing will not bring the rest of the system down. Windows doesn't bear up nearly so well.

Unlike windows, Linux tends not to slow down for no apparent reason after a year of use.

Linux is open and free, you can copy, modify and share it. Windows isn't.

Linux comes with bucket loads of application software of all types. Windows doesn't.

Linux usually comes with the development libraries, tools and compilers out of the box, so you can start developing. Windows doesn't and the tools costs a lot.

Linux comes with a number of powerful command line tools. If you want to bypass the window system, you can. You can administer, configure and use the system from the command line if you with. In windows, you can't.

Linux is not one product. There are many distributions packing together the kernel, applications and an installer. They differ in focus and approach. Some aimed at small size and efficiency, some aimed at desktop use, some aimed at servers etc.

Is there a remote support client that supports linux?
Q. My primary computer is my Macbook pro (OSX), and I need to access my Linux Desktop. I used Teamviewer before, when my Desktop ran Xp, but i changed to Ubuntu. Is there any other reliable (preferably free) program that can fill in for this?

A. You want to take a look at VNC {Virtual Network Computing}, which is a protocol that allows a desktop to be viewed & remotely controlled over the internet. It is available in free Open Source versions as well as some that are not free.

From your question it sounds like you want to set up the VNC server on the system running Ubuntu and use a VCN client on your Macbook to interact with it.

How to get wireless Internet on Linux ?
Q. So I just installed Linux and erased windows vista and all my files with it. Now I'm at my linux desktop and can't connect to my wifi network. When I go to the networks icon over the wireless option it cant be selected and says "device not ready (firmware missing). I've looked through the software center for drivers but I can't install them because the only button says "use this source" and when clicked does nothing.
So if someone could help me get on the Internet on it.

A. Missing firmware is typical of broadcom 43XX chipsets, but there are ways to get it.

How do I only allow a web browser to come up when booting my linux computer? No taskbar, just browser?
Q. I would like to put together a linux desktop for my grandparents - and figure if I can have the system boot only to a web browser like mozilla it would make it a lot more friendly for them since they wouldn't have a bunch of other things on the screen. That way they can get to their email and check their stocks. Is there a simple way to do this with KDE or Gnome? Thanks!!

A. You want to set your default startup runlevel to, instead of starting up a login process, start up a shell as a particular user (your grandparents' userid). Their shell initialization script should start up X, and then respawn or shutdown when X exits. Their initialization script for X can then start up selected processes (such as web browser), and you can configure their desktop so that the display is bare bones, with no taskbars visible.

The link below gives an introduction to Linux runlevels (i.e. - the startup process Linux goes through) and should be helpful.

I have tried yodm 3d but that didnt work at all.

A. To have Compiz you need to have Linux installed on your Computer

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 8 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 9.10 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled (including Compiz)

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 8 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Linux Mint 8 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

(Install Ubuntu inside Windows XP and Vista)

Installing Ubuntu as a dual-boot with Windows without partitioning
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/wubi

You keep Windows as it is, Wubi only adds an extra option to boot into Ubuntu. Wubi does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Boot in to windows insert the Ubuntu 9.10 LiveCD and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where the Wubi installer comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Ubuntu (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Ubuntu is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Ubuntu

COMPIZ

Linux Mint 7 as with Linux Mint 8 comes with Compiz preinstalled however Ubuntu 9.10 does not but it is a straightforward procedure as I will outline below

How to connect to the wireless internet on HP 2133 with Linux Desktop 10?
Q. I have HP 2133 with SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10. I need help connecting to wireless internet. I have tried everything. I've clicked everything that say "Network" but when I attempt to browse the web, I am still not connected. Can someone help me?

A. iwconfig is the package that u need im not sure which package manager Suse uses u may prosper from determining what chipset ur mobo is using on the wireless NIC, usually either broadcom or intel, and u should visit the Suse site wiki and search for supported wireless cards, the drivers may be built in or u may be able to retrieve with package manager,,u may or may not be able to use ur wireless card,, u should be able to as linux includes drivers for many devices, u may even be able to use ndiswrapper to use a windows driver and inf file to use the device,, all depends on the card and if the drivers are available to u, for most normal cards they are there, u would use iwconfig like ifconfig to configure the wireless interface and query for info,, there are other apps in repos for browsing wireless networks etc, u usually need to edit a network conf file or rc.conf file to allow the interface to come up at boot with the proper config, this can be done once and last til the system dies on redhat it's /etc/sysconfig/networkscripts i've seen like /etc/network/network.conf i think on Ubuntu which is debian based,,, not sure for Suse though, probably very similar, when u make the changes to the conf files u can just restart networking /etc/init.d/network restart from the command u can test connectivity by pinging outward to the internet like google.com or yahoo.com if u receive a response ur online,,,

Is there a Windows XP equivalent of the Linux Desktop Workspaces ?
Q. In Linux desktops, there is a notion of multiple workspaces. These workspaces reduce the cluttering of active applications. In Windows, often too many applications are shown in the start bar that it gets too confusing to identify which application is which.

For example, one may open several Word document. On the start bar, the user could only see a lot of active Word application running. Therefore, there is no quick way of getting to the right instance of Word quickly. Segregating the intances into different workspaces would help as in Linux.

A. I know the kind of thing you mean, I remember that from using UNIX at Uni. Anyway, there's no way to do that with XP 'out of the box' but there's a Powertoy written by MS themselves called "Virtual Desktop Manager" that gives you up to four virtual dekstops. I haven't tried it myself but it's free and worth a shot.

How to download Redhat Linux Enterprise Desktop free?
Q. Please tell me how to and from where to download Redhat Linux Enterprise Desktop for free. As it is an open source software, the source code has to be available. I heard they are giving the rpm packages of the source. If yes, how do I download it and how do I compile it? What's the difference if I purchase Redhat or compile it from source? Help PLzzz.

A. Unlike most Linux distros. Red Hat itself does not come free of charge

However CentOS and Fedora which come from the Red Hat stable are

How to save up for a MacBook Air?
Q. I have an iPad 3 (I love it very much) and I have an old Linux desktop I repaired last year. I need a MacBook Air as a primary computer because god only knows if on my Linux Desktop will crap out. Plus Macs are excellent for computer programming (what I want to do). I am 13 if that helps, so I can't get a job. Any suggestions on how to make money and save up?

A. Ethan You want ideas on how to save money to buy a Mac, you have stated that Macs are excellent for computer programming. Let me say they are no more excellent than your old Linux computer. The true facts are you can learn computer programming with your old Linux system at no cost to you, also you can do more with Linux than can be done with Mac iOS, if you took the time to find out what is and can be done with Linux OS that can't be done with iOS

Why do you think 492 of the world top 500 fastest computers run on Linux and none of them run Mac iOS,

Think about this, why can't Mac OS or Windows run from a live cd/dvd, usb ssd card or jump drive
Why do you think you can run Linux on your old computer yet you can't run Mac iOS on it, Do you know 4 yr old mac computers can't run the latest Mac iOS Check out another Linux hit with the $35 Raspberry PI computer that has sold over a million unit in less than 9 months of it's release that can do a thousand things more the the Mac computer. what program can i use to control my server running Ubuntu Linux on my windows PC.?
Q. I have an older computer running ubuntu linux desktop edition. I also have Samba File and Printer Sharing and Web Servers installed. I have WebMin installed. Everything seems to be working. I want a way to control my server using a GUI and the Xwindows system on my PC. So basicly I want to see my Linux server on my windows PC(s).

A. you want to setup a program called tightvnc server, then on your windows pc you can use a small app called vncviewer. its small and fairly simple
Here is a pretty good howto on setting up the server end.

http://maketecheasier.com/set-up-a-vnc-server-in-ubuntu-hardy-heron/2008/05/30

How do I share files on my server?
Q. I have an Ubuntu server and I want to share some of its files with my Windows AND LINUX desktops. I have heard that you can use Samba to share files with Windows, but will I be able to access the files throught Samba on a Linux desktop? Thanks.

A. sudo apt-get install samba

then edit /etc/samba/smb.conf
At the bottom it will have some sample shares. These will show up as the shared folders.

ex>
security = share
[Applications]
path=/home/offensivetech/apps/
guest only = yes
read only = yes
browseable = yes

This would put an "Applications" folder to show up when you go to
\\servername

Make sure to reload the samba config whenever making changes to the configuration file.
sudo /etc/init.d/samba reload
(might be sudo /etc/init.d/smb reload , can't remember).

Is it possible to port the display of my Windows machine over to my Linux desktop?

Q. I have a Windows desktop tower next to my Linux desktop. Is there a way to have my Windows machine in a separate window on my Linux desktop? I hate having to screw with hooking up another monitor every time I (am forced) to used Windows for something.

A. You could get a cable splitter and have one end into ur monitor and the 2 other ends going into the 2 computers. This may not be the best thing if you want to use both at once however.

Best way (and what i do with my laptop) is to install a VNC server/client.

1) If you're using Linux as ur main machine then you may have some VNC program built in (espec if you run kde). If not then find one from somewhere. Install the client on your linux.

2) For windows i suggest TightVNC as its what I use.. Seems relatively easy too. Just install the server on that comp.

Then just use ur linux comp to access the windows pc via a network.. Easy!

How do you install softwares downloaded from other sites to Linux (Ubuntu)?

Q. Pls tell me in detail, step by step, as I have downloaded .tar & .tar.gz files on my ubuntu linux desktop. I am new to linux and i only know that I have to open terminal and type the codes. Tell me how to open, how to install and where to install.

A. save yourself a lot of hassles and use the package manager. Linux doesn't install software in the same way as windows. With windows, you just download the file and its all there. Run the setup executable and it installs. easy. With linux, there's the software (tar.gz etc) that you've downloaded and then there may be up to 5, 10, + packages that need to be installed so that the file can run. These include libraries, programming languages, etc. You also have to make sure you obtain the correct version of each dependency. It can be a real pain in the butt.

The package manager makes all the calculations for you. You just tell it what you want to install and it gets all the dependencies and sets them all up for you. Ubuntu has a great range of packages already available. Only go the downloading and installing non .deb files if you really have no alternative or if you can see that the dependencies required are either already installed or easy to obtain.

The following page may be of use to you.

http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43

Help PLzzz.

A. iwconfig is the package that u need im not sure which package manager Suse uses u may prosper from determining what chipset ur mobo is using on the wireless NIC, usually either broadcom or intel, and u should visit the Suse site wiki and search for supported wireless cards, the drivers may be built in or u may be able to retrieve with package manager,,u may or may not be able to use ur wireless card,, u should be able to as linux includes drivers for many devices, u may even be able to use ndiswrapper to use a windows driver and inf file to use the device,, all depends on the card and if the drivers are available to u, for most normal cards they are there, u would use iwconfig like ifconfig to configure the wireless interface and query for info,, there are other apps in repos for browsing wireless networks etc, u usually need to edit a network conf file or rc.conf file to allow the interface to come up at boot with the proper config, this can be done once and last til the system dies on redhat it's /etc/sysconfig/networkscripts i've seen like /etc/network/network.conf i think on Ubuntu which is debian based,,, not sure for Suse though, probably very similar, when u make the changes to the conf files u can just restart networking /etc/init.d/network restart from the command u can test connectivity by pinging outward to the internet like google.com or yahoo.com if u receive a response ur online,,,

Ubuntu 9.10 and Linux Mint 7 can also be run straight from the LiveCD without touching your Hard drive

COMPIZ

Linux Mint 7 as with Linux Mint 8 comes with Compiz preinstalled however Ubuntu 9.10 does not but it is a straightforward procedure as I will outline below

To begin with regardless of whether you will be working with Ubuntu or Linux Mint you need to enable the Driver for your Graphics card
