Is Gentoo a good Linux distro?

Q. I've heard a lot about its package manager, but for some reason it's really rubbing me the wrong way.

A. Gentoo is a distro for people who want customization. Most distros come with a GUI already installed, but Gentoo just comes with the basics. When you boot in for the first time you'll be presented only with a command line. Using their excellent package manager you can quickly get up and running with the desktop environment you want.

Is Gentoo linux really as hard as they say it is to install?
Q. Ive had that minimal install iso sitting on my hard drive, afraid to even burn it, for fear of all the difficulty in installing that i have heard. I definitely want to install it, customize it and have it running well, is there any tutorial or howto besides the one on their site, a good one, simple enough for a dummy but not limited to

A. Installing Gentoo is fairly straight-forward. The main issue is the time it takes to compile everything, which shouldn't be very long now that stage3 is the default.

My suggestion: Don't use genkernel. Configure your kernel yourself. It produces a much better kernel and is actually fairly simple.

Also, you will want to have some knowledge with a UNIX shell. The second link should be sufficient.

If you have any problems, a good place to get help is the Gentoo Forums.

Be sure to read a lot of the info in the Gentoo Docs. They'll teach you to set up X, KDE or GNOME, and several other things.

The Gentoo Wiki has plenty of information as well.

Hope that helps!

Good luck. I hope you enjoy Gentoo Linux. :-)

How is Gentoo for people new to Linux?
Q.

A. Gentoo is generally not recommended for new users due to there is much package compiling and Terminal work

If you would like a work out of the box Gentoo based distro. then take a look at Sabayon Linux

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 8 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 9.10 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

Linux Mint 8 User Guide Download pdf.

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 8 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Linux Mint 8 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive
