How do I download Linux (Ubuntu) on to a dvd and operate the OS from it?

Q. At least until I am used to it, then I will install it on to the laptop.
I have windows vista.

A. Installing Ubuntu as a dual-boot with Windows without partitioning

Download Ubuntu Desktop Edition

You download the ISO. image of Ubuntu 10.10 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Ubuntu 10.10 as can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Boot without touching your Hard Drive

Download Ubuntu Desktop Edition (Windows installer standalone Dowload) LiveCD not needed

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 10 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 10.10 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

Linux Mint has a similar installer called mint4win (mint4win works the same as the Ubuntu Windows installer so the instructions outlined above are almost identical)

You keep Windows as it is, mint4win only adds an extra option to boot into Linux Mint. mint4win does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

mint4win keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Boot in to windows insert the Linux Mint LiveCD and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where the mint4win installer comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Linux Mint (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Linux Mint is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Linux Mint

Again Linux Mint 10 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Boot without touching your Hard Drive

Can anyone tell me what components I need to download so that I can install software to linux OS?
Q. I want to be able to use Linux xp 2007, however before I invest in it, I want to know if it can run Mainstream software, like windows xp. Or do you have to go through a bunch of changes to get it to work. If it isnt worth the effort, I'll dump it and go back to windows. Suggestions, pls. thank you in advance.

A. You can't run Windows XP on Linux, but there is software to be able to make some of the software work, like Office and Photoshop, as well as other programs. For that, you need CrossOver Office, which is available at http://www.codeweavers.com. Google Earth and Picasa have Linux versions available. Most IM apps have Linux versions, but they haven't been updated in a long while.

There are free alternatives, however. OpenOffice.org is an excellent replacement for MS Office. It can do everything Office can, for free and natively for Linux. This is included with most distros and is available from http://www.openoffice.org. Gaim is an awesome multiprotocol IM client for Linux, meaning you can be on AIM, Yahoo!, MSN, and GTalk all at the same time, and more. It is available at http://gaim.sf.net.

Where can I download the Linux OS?
Q. I need an easy-to-use website because I don't know anything about Linux, really. I would like to download it to install on a spare computer to learn more about it. Instructions would be great, too. Thanks!

A. best would be http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download all versions of linux are free of charge. ubuntu is the easy to use.

this can be a big download over 800mb so you'll need broadband to download it.
