Second function key doesnt work on Backtrack 5 R2 Linux?

Q. I am using a sony vaio laptop, Y series VPCYB35AG. To adjust the brightens and volume. However this doesnt work on Backtrack linux 5 R2. So i think it is a driver that is missing. If so, where can i find one?

Also how does Kmix work, how do i play music with it?
If not what is the problem then?

A. 1. The controls for backlights vary . For most systems, you can try adding

Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"

to the Device section of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file (create it if it doesn't exist).

2. KMix only controls the volume. It doesn't play music. Install / use a media player such as Amarok or Rhythmbox.

How do I boot Backtrack with VMware?
Q. I've downloaded Backtrack Linux, and I've set it up with VMware. When I go to boot it, I've tried it in text mode and safe mode, but I just get the message:
This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU. Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU.
How can I fix this, or get it to boot?

A. The problem is that you have selected to download it as 64-bit. That's too much for the CPU to handle, so you must download 32-bit, when you're on the Backtrack website. I selected, Gnome, 32-bit, ISO, Direct- as my options. And then when I was setting it up, I used Linux OS, then, Other Linux 2.6.x kernel. This fixed everything.

PS, This is actually Flame Sword on another account. I figured out how to fix it, and I wanted to put the correct answer up here for other people to refer to. Thank you!

How to type password in BackTrack 4 Linux LOGIN?
Q. I burned Backtrack 4 Linux [Final Release] to a DVD and than i type "login" than enter "root" than I try to enter "toor" but here's the thing, NO KEY REGISTERS INTO IT [as in can't type anything in] I tried this on 2 different computers but same issue, what do i do?

A. you could also boot into linux at a 'lower level' (text only login) which should resolve also.

ctrl + alt then try numbers 1 - 7 until you get lower level. After logging in successfully, run 'startx'

What is the best linux distribution for an older computer?

Q. Which linux distribution would be the best to install on a older computer that still woks fine, like: 866mhz, 512ram, 80GB hard drive?
I mean, so I can reuse an older computer for basic tasks such as browsing the web, writing documents, store some music and pictures.

A. Something like Ubuntu or Debian would work fine.

http://www.ubuntu.com/products/WhatIsUbuntu/desktopedition
http://www.debian.org/

Gnome is another popular choice:
http://www.gnome.org/

Puppy Linix runs only in RAM, that might be a good choice for an older computer with a slower processor:
http://www.puppylinux.org/

Another good distro for a slower computer is VectorLinux. I have seen it run on much slower PC's than yours:

What Linux Distribution should I put on my other hard drive partion?
Q. I have to hard drive partions, with one partion being Windows XP, and the other getting ready for Linux. I am wondering what Linux distribution I should use. The computer I use is for Home use, like homework, web browsing, ect... Any suggestions?

A. I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 7 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 9.04 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

The Perfect Desktop - Linux Mint 7 (Gloria)
http://www.howtoforge.com/the-perfect-desktop-linux-mint-7-gloria

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 7 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Linux Mint 7 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

INSTALL LINUX MINT WITHIN WINDOWS

Linux Mint has a feature called mint4win based on the Wubi installer (Ubuntu) http://wubi-installer.org/ which enables you to install Linux Mint within windows (Windows 7 run mint4win in vista compatability mode)

You keep Windows as it is, mint4win only adds an extra option to boot into Linux Mint. mint4win does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

mint4win like Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Boot in to windows insert the LiveCD you have just created and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where mint4win comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Linux Mint (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Linux Mint is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Linux Mint

What Linux distribution is best for me and how much should i partition?
Q. I am going to make a dual boot system and i was wondering what linux distribution would offer new things that windows dosent. It would be nice if the distribution was free. I was also wondering how much i should partition off for linux

A. Linux is petty good in not taking up much space. I'd recommend partitioning about half as it is the easiest option and is done by default in most Linux installers.

As for which distro, that is a matter of personal preference. I personally like openSUSE and use it both at home and at work.
http://opensuse.org

Many recommend Ubuntu for beginners. However I despise the Gnome interface, so I'd go with Kubuntu (Ubuntu with the KDE interface.
http://ubuntu.org
http://kubuntu.org

In any distro, to get multimedia files to play and 3d acceleration to work, you will have to do some tweaking. This is due to the fact that many of these drivers and codecs are proprietary. Older ATi graphics cards can be iffy under Linux. The graphics will work, but you may not have 3d acceleration.

Playing DVDs may even require you to break the law by downloading decss to break DVD encryption. Seems odd to have to break the law to allow the legal use of your DVD, doesn't it?

There are guides for getting all that to work.

xp / linux dual boot, why does windows change the clock to the wrong time?

Q. I have an Asus eee 900a running tiny xp on the ssd and crunchbang linux on the SD card. Sometimes when I boot into windows it changes the clock making it incorrect. I change it but it eventually changes itself back again. Why is it doing this?

A. The convention under windows is that the computer's real-time clock maintains local time. Under UNIX and Linux, the convention is that the real-time clock maintains Greenwich Mean Time. So when you switch back and forth, it's common that your clock is off by your offset from GMT under one of the OSes. The way you can avoid this problem is to tell your Linux system that you want the RTC to maintain local time rather than GMT, just like the Windows convention.

In your distro of Linux, you would edit /etc/rc.conf, and set

HARDWARECLOCK" = "localtime"

rather than

HARDWARECLOCK" = "UTC"

Your Linux system is probably using NTP to sync the time, so even though it is a few hours off right after you boot, it gets the correct time a little while later. However, it is always off when you boot.

Any good linux distro for an old Pentium III Computer?
Q. I have an old Pentium III computer with 128mb of RAM in it. What would be a good linux to put in it. I hate DSL and Puppy and I love a lot of ready to use programs. (Ubuntu Alternative maybe like CrunchBang Linux?)

A. I thoroughly recommend taking a look at Linux Mint 6 Felicia Fluxbox Community Edition http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_felicia_fluxbox_whatsnew.php

System Requirements

x86 processor
128 MB of system memory (RAM)
2 GB of disk space for installation
VGA graphics card capable of 800x600 resolution
CD-ROM drive

On crunchbang Linux everything is incredibly small and I can't see a thing. Is there any fix?
Q. I'm unable to do anything with my crunchbang. Please help.

A. Most solutions require that you are able to see a menu item or open a terminal and type a command since you cannot see ANYTHING the only solution is to reinstall it and be aware of any options for font size and video formats when you do.
Good luck

What are the cons and prons of the following types of computer?

Q. - A Mac OS X with the latest software suite (Snow Leopard i think)
- A PC with the Unix operating system
- A PC with the latest version of the Windows OS (Windows 7)

I really need help with the first two since I have never used them before and a few links/websites would help.

A. Mac - overpriced, inferior hardware, you're locked into Apple hardware, anything other than running files takes knowledge of the Unix shell. There are no advantages.

Unix - you need a knowledge of Unix. No friendly wizards to do it for you. Same as a Mac. (Not surprising, since Mac OSX is FreeBSD, a Unix offshoot.)

Windows - easier to run for 99.99% of computer users. Disadvantage - ease of writing viruses for i, so the average computer user, not knowing how to not download viruses, downloads more of them.

In which industries are using UNIX operating system?
Q. Hi experts!
Please tell me, who are using UNIX operating system in the real world applications.

A. UNIX is on servers, man. Remember Jurassic park? They used UNIX. UNIX is mainly used when you want computing time to go toward something more important than a user interface, like accessing data, like on servers.

Unix operating system had been almost entirely recorded in C. Why this made porting to other hardware easier?
Q. the unix operating system was developed in assembly language, but by 1973 Why this made porting to other hardware easier

How do you show the processes that are running in linux under a command line?

Q. And, how do you show how much memory and cpu each is using?

A. Check out the manpage for ps. The most common syntax is "ps auxww" which will show PID, CPU usage, Memory usage, process name, etc for each process that is running on your system. "top" shows real time information and ranks processes by their CPU/RAM usage.

What slows down computers besides memory usage?
Q. I just deleted a whole lot from my laptop, and I ran a 'defragmentation' on the hard-drive, but it's still going really slow. Any ideas?
More detail: It's slow to open programs or new windows. There's a delay between when I click an icon and when the window opens.

A. Are you familiar with the Task manager? (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) The task manager will show you which processes are using you processor power and how much virtual memory.

What version of Windozes? Have you tried using a registry cleaner? Do you have a reliable anti-virus?

When I used to use Windozes, I had to wipe it about every 6 months and start over. It just seemed to get unstable after prolonged use. I now use Ubuntu Linux.

What operating system should i install on a VERY old computer?
Q. The computer again is extremely old, ie 5-6 years (integrated graphics, 1 gig ram, pentium processor, etc). Now i want to find an OS that is both simple to use and one that will run efficiently, especially for viewing photos and movies (obviously this is bottle-necked by hardware, but there should be differences in memory and cpu usage from OS to OS),

So what do you suggest? the new chrome OS, win XP, ubuntu?

A. Old machines run best on what they were designed for, But time marches on and computer os support runs out of steam. If your machine was designed for XP os then use it, upgrade as much of the hardware as economical and go from there. You may find it would be best to purchase a new machine rather then try to upgrade on your own. If that is not an option and you are determined then you should start with the memory, then the video card. If your machine is at least a P4 running at close to 2.0GHz then you will have a chance depending on your technical ability. If not then you should shop the internet for a used system that is within the price range of what you are going to spend on upgrading your machine. To answer your question Google Chrome OS is only to be used for the modern netbooks (condensed and stripped down laptop computers), Win XP was most likely the OS that was installed at the factory on your machine, and Linux Ubuntu is free and open source software.... XP is my choice

where can i get a free operating system for an old laptop?

Q. I have a Toshiba Tecra 730XCDT from round about 1995 and i want to download a free operating system for it. i don't care whether it's text-based or GUI but it needs to fit on a 3.5" floppy.

A. your best option would be a VERY small BSD install or an equally small Linux install. you may even wish to try Minix
Google it!

downloaded an operating system from university how do i burn it onto a dvd and install it on the computer?
Q. The university where I teach offers free operating systems for the computers that are bought from them, I bought one such computer, it came with no operating system installed. I downloaded it onto this computer (as instructed) and i was wondering how to burn it and install it on my new computer, Thanks.
As I said if you read the whole question it is OFFERED for FREE by the school since I teach there.

A. What extension does the downloaded file have, my friend? If it's an .iso file you can use a FREE ISO Burner program, such as ImgBurn.

Once the program has been installed, you can right-click on the .iso file and select to burn it ... or open it with ... dependent on which Operating System your computer is running.

Do you know which Operating System the university have allowed you to download, my friend? I ask this as Windows XP and earlier would only require you to burn to CD disc, whereas Windows Vista and Windows 7 require a DVD disc. You can get an idea of which size disc you will require by looking at the properties of the file that you have. If it's under 700 MB in size it will fit onto a CD disc. Larger than this means that you'll need a DVD disc. (Various different distributions of Linux depend on what, exactly, is included in that distribution. Some will fit on a CD and other will require a DVD.)

what is the besst free operating system for a windows user?
Q. I have a new compter and I don't have money to buy windows so I need a free operating system.
I'm used to windows .
I tried linux but it's diffrent from windows in so many ways.
and I bought a used computer that the owners erased the hard disc.

A. Ubuntu Linux ( http://www.ubuntu.com ) or gOS ( http://www.thinkgos.com/ )

is it legal to download linux from the internet to install on a pc?

Q. Hi,
I was just wondering if it is legal and free to download a linux os onto my computer to burn on to a disc so that i can install it on a computer with no os loaded.
I have heard lots of stuff about linux being free but i just want to make sure.
Thanks.

A. Yes.. linux is a FREE SOURCE OS.. meaning you can download it, alter it, rape it, w/e. there is no law. ENJOY IT !!

How do you remove a Linux OS to install windows?
Q. I purchased a "used" computer from my company and it has a Linux OS on it. I would like to wipe it clean and install windows, but not sure how. Is there an easy way to do this?
I tried starting up with the windows 7 disk, in hopes it would just "over ride" the other, but no luck. The current OS is uBuntu...not sure if that makes a difference or not.

A. If you have a cd/dvd of the operating system you want, just put in on your optical drive
turn on your computer, press F8 or whatever button to change start up drive, change booth drive to your optical drive, save setting, exit and reboot.
Your computer will read your cd/dvd and will prompt you.
It will find your hard drive and ask you if you want to install it on that drive. (default C drive).
If you have a huge hard drive, you can partition your C drive to whatever size you want.
I prefer to assign only 50 Gig for drive C. Once the operating system is installed, I partition the remaining drive and use it as storage drive.
It fill format the drive and install your operating system.
Just follow the instructions of the install prompts.

If you are still having problems, use a separate computer, search for Hiren's boot cd in .iso format. Download and burn on cd/dvd. Just boot the cd in your used computer. It has a lot of partitioning programs you can choose to reformat your hard drive.

If I saved Linux on a usb, could I use it on a school computer running windows?
Q. If I downloaded Linux OS onto a USB, can I put it into a school computer and run it on there? The computers run windows as do most organisations.

A. The usb ports are probably all disabled to begin with unless the admin is an idiot.
