Second function key doesnt work on Backtrack 5 R2 Linux?

Q. I am using a sony vaio laptop, Y series VPCYB35AG. To adjust the brightens and volume. However this doesnt work on Backtrack linux 5 R2. So i think it is a driver that is missing. If so, where can i find one?

Also how does Kmix work, how do i play music with it?
If not what is the problem then?

A. 1. The controls for backlights vary . For most systems, you can try adding

Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"

to the Device section of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file (create it if it doesn't exist).

2. KMix only controls the volume. It doesn't play music. Install / use a media player such as Amarok or Rhythmbox.

How do I boot Backtrack with VMware?
Q. I've downloaded Backtrack Linux, and I've set it up with VMware. When I go to boot it, I've tried it in text mode and safe mode, but I just get the message:
This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU. Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU.
How can I fix this, or get it to boot?

A. The problem is that you have selected to download it as 64-bit. That's too much for the CPU to handle, so you must download 32-bit, when you're on the Backtrack website. I selected, Gnome, 32-bit, ISO, Direct- as my options. And then when I was setting it up, I used Linux OS, then, Other Linux 2.6.x kernel. This fixed everything.

PS, This is actually Flame Sword on another account. I figured out how to fix it, and I wanted to put the correct answer up here for other people to refer to. Thank you!

How to actively switch between two OS's in a dualboot partition setup?
Q. I'm dualbooting backtrack and Linux mint KDE 9. Is there a way to switch between the two partitions without having to completely reboot and go through the GRUB menu?

A. Unless you have some sort of virtual machine software you have to reboot so the operating system can have control of the hardware.

Are liberals more likely to use uncommon UNIX or Linux distributions?
Q. I'm a liberal and have three different operating systems. I use FreeBSD, Backtrack Linux and Linux Mint.

Where do you consider yourself to be politically and which Operating System are you currently using?
@ reek - I strongly recommend Linux Mint. It's far better than Windows, and as Linux distributions go it's pretty well mainstreamed for average users.
Windows 8 is awful - I'm convinced it's going to be an even bigger disaster for Microsoft than Vista was. If you have Windows 7 I recommend staying with it.
Unless you're thinking of switching to Linux that is.

A. I'm not liberal, and I use Windows, osX, Linux Mint, Fedora, DSL (Damn Small Linux), openBSD, and for kicks beta test several new trending distros. I also have two old atari's (ST and Falcon) that I use for classic gaming.

How do I install applications on Backtrack 2 Linux Distribution?
Q. Hi,

I just installed the Backtrack 2 Linux distribution and I am very newbiew at everything with Linux. So say i wanted to install the Pidgin instant message source. The file name is pidgin-2.2.2.tar.bz2. What exactly would i type in to unpack that file and then install it? And I am also interested in installing Wine. Could someone walk me through that as well?

A. http://forums.remote-exploit.org/showthread.php?t=7180
Try reading here. This distribution is based on slackware Linux and it CAN be difficult for beginners. If I were to recommend a distr for a "newbie" it'd be PCLinuxOS or Freespire. they're TRULY "newbie-friendly" distros.
Hope you have MANY years of fun and learning Linux!

Is installing backtrack effect bios of my system?
Q. someone told me if i install backtrack linux, then i won't be able to install window 7 later i.e it change my all bios settings and i won't recover it later
Is it right or not please tell me soon.

A. It is wrong in that it does not touch your BIOS settings or do anything specifically to disable installing Windows 7. It is somewhat more difficult, but still possible, to install Windows 7 afterward. However, if you have both, you should install Windows 7 first for the easiest dual-boot setup.

what is the different between backtrack and Slackware Linux ?
Q. well i was wondering if you could tell me what is the different between backtrack and Slackware Linux or do they have anything in common

A. Backtrack is a Linux distro on LiveCD with is designed to provide an easy way to do security testing (such as penetration testing on a network). I don't think it's used as a regular, installable distro.

Slackware is a full-blown Linux distribution which has been around since about 1993. Slack is one of the oldest existing Linux distributions, and is one of my favorites, especially for server use.

Backtrack was, according to what I read, based on SLAX, which was a derivative of the original Slackware.

BackTrack Linux Not Reading Files in Mounted Drive?
Q. I am running BackTrack R2. I recently bought a 1TB Western Digital Passport External Portable HDD. I copied all my stuff into it. It worked fine for 2-3 days.

Now when i connect it to my Laptop, it opens the explorer showing only one folder "System Volume Information". I checked the properties; it still shows that only 500 GB(approx) is free. In terminal, the "ls" command shows that all my files are there. I already tried CTRL-H in the explorer, so hidden files is not an issue. I connected the HDD to a Windows Box and i am able to see all my files properly.

What should i do (besides switching to Windows?? Thanking in Anticipation.

A. Hi
Try this
http://help.artaro.eu/index.php/data-recovery/recover-files-from-hard-disk.html#.UIVFfunDmCA
Backtrack is to advanced for a new linux user.
I think I have answered you before

How do you install Backtrack 3 to a hard drive without wiping the data?
Q. I have Windows Vista and Ubuntu already as boot options and I want to add Backtrack 3 as another boot option. I already have the iso downloaded. I've searched around but all the tutorials I have read don't tell me how to boot into the 3rd option (VESA/KDE) or their instructions would wipe my hard drive.Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

A. hmmm.... try to install it under a new partition behind windows using windows free space.

2. sometimes grub acts bad and don't want to let you run windows after this so to fix this problem run ubuntu live cd and follow this tutorial. it should fix. the problem with your grub menu list. here is a video on how to do it the grub fix http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtBBl6HvdpM&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fuser%2FNixiePixel&feature=player_profilepage

3. this should work remember to rate. i would like to know if it works still it work for me in the past with fedora, win, ubuntu. note:::::

The best way to install any three OS would be Windows first, some linux distro, then ubuntu. (they do a great job grub)

4. if your scared to do it this way try a virtual machine

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/ you can run it inside of windows.

Good luck remember to rate.

Q. I'm dualbooting backtrack and Linux mint KDE 9. Is there a way to switch between the two partitions without having to completely reboot and go through the GRUB menu?

A. Unless you have some sort of virtual machine software you have to reboot so the operating system can have control of the hardware.

Thank you!

A. Hi
Try this
