How do I make my Linux computer work with a wireless Belcan router?

Q. I need step by step instructions. I just had linux put on my desktop computer. I have a wireless adapter that plugs into the pc. Where do i get the software to run the router with Linux? can I download the install program onto a usb drive and then install it on the linux computer? will the linux computer even recognize the usb?

A. Hi
Which linux are you running?
When you type lsusb or lspci into the terminal can you identify which chip is in the usb? It will be at the bottom of the list.

At school, how can you send a message to another linux computer using the linux version of command prompt?
Q. I have been trying to figure out how to send a message to another linux computer at school for a while now by using the linux version of command prompt. I have tried using the write command but it says I have write abilities disabled. I have also tried using smbclient -M accountnamehere and it always says failiure to connect to whatever account I tried to connect to. Any help would be awesome.

A. Maybe you as a normal user just don't have the rights to do so. It's probably so for security reasons.

How can you install Shockwave on a Linux computer?
Q. I recently bought a nifty little Eeepc, it works great for everything, it even plays videos and things really well.
The only problem is it runs on a linux system... does anyone know a way how I can install a shockwave player onto a linux computer?

A. this is gonna take a little work ;)

read this to install wine on your eee http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:wine

wine will allow you to run windows programs under linux. after this, you should downlaod and install firefox for windows.

run it under wine and install shockwave.

this may be a hack but at the moment, there is no native shockwave player for linux or last i read, macs even.

is there a way to turn a linux computer into windows?

A. If you have a windoze install disk I imagine you could reformat and reinstall.

How do I get the Sibelius Scorch plugin in Linux?
Q. I am trying to print off some sheet music that is only available in the Sibelius Scorch format from a website, but I cannot figure out how to get Sibelius Scorch onto my Linux computer. I tried installing to the Mozilla FIrefox plugin folder, but it still didnt work. Any suggestions?
I am using Firefox 3. Any other way besides downgrading? I really dont want to have to do that.

A. Some have gotten i to work using under wine in linux.
Here are 2 interesting links.

How to fix the sound on a computer?
Q. My Linux computer's sound has suddenly stopped functioning. I have checked it out and its not on mute and the volume is on and turned up. I also plugged headphones into the back of my computer and I still didn't get anything.
Does anyone know how to fix it? Also if I have to get a new sound card or something does anyone know where I can get one and about how much it will cost, and how to replace it. Thanks!

A. To verify it, check your speaker any power (green led light "ON"). If got power, then check the control program hardware sound card whether is present (without error!).I suspect the sound card bad or either software corupted. U can try to remove from hardware> sound card & remove program > software sound card then reboot the system let your system find hardware for u follow by install your sound card driver(disc starter kit for sound). If Still nt working, then remove the sound card from computer and bring card to sim lim sq and buy the sound card different brand is ok but make sure the slot size must be the same that why i ask u to bring along the sound card. (if it's a build in sound card which u can't remove coz attach with motherboard/mainboard then no choice).

How do I download stuff on a Linux computer?
Q. My brother just made the Dell computer a Linux and I have no idea how to download anything. I keep trying to download Skype but it won't download correctly when I press Save. It keeps opening a new link on Google Chrome and its about blank. How do I download stuff on a Linux computer?

A. What distribution is it? You will want to get everything from the synaptic manager, that is the safest way to get your software. If you trust the source where you are to download either the .deb, .rpm, or source file you can do it that way as well, just be sure to check the checksum of that download.

In a terminal Change the Directory to here the file is located, which will most likely be the Downloads folder.

(ex.)
cd Downloads

md5sum <<file.name>>

When typing the file name in you can hit tab after the first couple of letter which should complete the task. If a file name has any spaces it must be put in quotations.

(ex.)
md5sum "file name"

you will be given a hash number, compare it to the checksum that the source site provides. The Checksum is basically the softwares fingerprint, if it doesn't match it is a fake.

Computer requirements for college? Is a linux computer a bad idea?

Q. I will need a computer for college, and I heard that some schools limit what OS's or types of computer their students can bring. For example, only windows, or only computers with Microsoft Word. Do any of you go to college and know whether this is true? And if you do have a linux computer at college (which I want) have there been any problems?

A. I had a couple issues using a linux distro in college. Most I was able to resolve; however, 1 issue a did run into was that some of the online resources that the college required me to access were only compatible with Internet Exploder... cough.. hack, I mean Internet Explorer. Granted this was entirely the resource's flaw and had nothing to do with linux, but there wasnt much i could do about it. If anything, u may just want to do a multi-boot setup. You should be able to get a discounted or *free copy of windows from the school, so multi-booting shouldnt be to big of an issue

How can i create a wireless Network between two Windows Xp and Linux computers?

Q. Wireless Networking between Two Windows XP and Two Linux Computers, How is this Possible?

A. You set up a wireless network (for example by buying a wireless router in a computer store and installing it in your house). Then you can configure both your machines to connect to it (if you have all laptops, they usually have wireless already built into them, otherwise you can also get a router which has a few LAN ports in addition to the wireless).

When all machines are on the same network you can set up file sharing on the Windows machine, and the Linux machine will be able to browse to that computer with no additional setup required (on distributions such as Ubuntu, Fedora, and many more...). You do this from Linux by opening Nautilus (the default file browser on many Linuxes) and clicking the "Network" icon and browsing the network. You can also set up file sharing on Linux and browse to the Linux machine from Windows.
