What are the different syntax used in Linux and Windows command line interface?

Q. What are the different syntax used in Linux and Windows command line interface?

A. The Windows one is based on MS-DOS the Linux one is based on UNIX. There's tonnes of differences.

So you do 'ls' instead of 'dir'. 'cd' works the same but uses '/' in Linux and '/' in Windows. There's tonnes of other differences.

All MS-DOS commands are here: http://www.computerhope.com/msdos.htm

Linux ones are here: http://www.oreillynet.com/linux/cmd/

How do I run a web browser from linux command line?
Q. I an VERY new to linux. I have installed Fedora 5 in text mode. I have a Linux book and am trying to slowly learn linux. So from the console, or command line, how do I run a web browser. Also how do I run the X Windows System?

A. If you installed in text mode, maybe you didn't install X. You probably have a text mode browser. Try lynx or elinks. If the startx command doesn't work, try "yum install x-window-system". By the way, Fedora 5 is old. The current version of Fedora is 9.

How can I set folder permissions in linux in such a way that users can create files/folders, but not delete?
Q. I have made a folder on my linux server, which needs to function as some sort of "deposit box".

Users should be able to create files & folders, but not delete them after they have been created.
Is that possible from a linux command line?

A. You'd probably have to mess with umask and chmod.
umask [-p] [-S] [mode]
The user file-creation mask is set to mode. If mode begins with a digit, it is interpreted as an octal number; otherwise it is interpreted as a symbolic mode mask similar to that accepted by chmod(1). If mode is omitted, the current value of the mask is printed. The -S option causes the mask to be printed in symbolic form; the default output is an octal number. If the -p option is supplied, and mode is omitted, the output is in a form that may be reused as input. The return status is 0 if the mode was successfully changed or if no mode argument was supplied, and false otherwise.

What is the windows equivalent of the Linux terminal's CTRL + D?

Q. I wrote and compiled a c program, and in the Linux command line, it allows me to enter text, then press CTRL + D to enter the next step of the program, if thats what you wanna call it. Ive recompiled the source for windows, and i notice that CTRL + D just types ^D... what key combo should I be using?

A. If the program is looking for end-of-file, use ctrl-Z.

Q. Using command line only, how to I retrieve the exact number of frames in a given video in Linux?

ffmpeg will return the duration in minutes and the framerate but duration*framerate does not give an exact number of frames.

I need to know the exact number of frames.

A. mplayer -identify -fps 1 VIDEOFILE

Then look at
ID_VIDEO_FPS=1.000
ID_VIDEO_ASPECT=0.0000
ID_AUDIO_FORMAT=80
ID_AUDIO_BITRATE=224000
ID_AUDIO_RATE=0
ID_AUDIO_NCH=0
ID_LENGTH=41819.00

Notice how the length, in seconds, is now the exact number of frames. (41819 frames)

If you need it to be interactive-less:
mplayer -msglevel all=0 -identify -fps 1 -vo null -frames 0 VIDEOFILE | grep ID_LENGTH

Or, for a program:
mplayer -identify -fps 1 -vo null -frames 0 -msglevel all=-1 VIDEO > moviedata

then to get the frame info:

grep ID_LENGTH moviedata

should do.

Thanks for that, now I know how to do it too!

I have Fedora 10, a 80GB hard disk and want to add a new one of 640GB. How can i manage to transfer the data?
Q. I want to transfer the data of 80GB disk to the new one (an 'image' as it is known). I know that exists a specific command through the linux command line(the terminal). I also want to make a partition of the 640GB hard disk. Is there a command also for this?
Thanks!

A. Here are a couple of links for your question:

How can I safe a javascript generated page to an html file from a linux command line?

Q. Hi,
I have a javascript/ajax page that I'd like to save as the generated html to a file. URL
http://www.neaveru.com/digg/stats/kevinrose/max_comments/0/days/14

Is there a way to do that? I haven't found any firefox command-line like that.
Thanks!
safe?? save! ;)
sorry, I want to run this in a cron... so I can't click ;)

A. from FF & a cron, no way.

there might be some lynx variant or other 'get' tool that does JavaScript.

http://www.google.com/search?q=linux+JavaScript+command+line

you could capture the data that the ajax gets, and save that to a file... but not the graph.

is it your site? a little cgi program instead would be able to capture the graph.

I could do it in Safari on a mac with applescript!

how do you access a remote computer from the linux command line?
Q. i know the sshusername@computername part, but how do i get to the point where i type that in the command line?

A. Take a look at the "ssh" command (manual page linked below from Duke University)

Q. how do I reset the numbers on the command line prompt:

hostname[1000]%

I noticed when I log in it always starts at 1000 and counts up til I logout and login again. When I login again it still starts at 1000. How do I reset this number? I thought it was the history command, but learned it wasn't.

Using command line only, how to I retrieve the exact number of frames in a given video in Linux?

Then look at
ID_VIDEO_FPS=1.000
ID_VIDEO_ASPECT=0.0000
ID_AUDIO_FORMAT=80
ID_AUDIO_BITRATE=224000
ID_AUDIO_RATE=0
ID_AUDIO_NCH=0
ID_LENGTH=41819.00

How do I reset the numbers on Linux command line prompt?
Q. how do I reset the numbers on the command line prompt:

hostname[1000]%

I noticed when I log in it always starts at 1000 and counts up til I logout and login again. When I login again it still starts at 1000. How do I reset this number? I thought it was the history command, but learned it wasn't.

A. You need to set the prompt variables in your profile file or in the .bash_rc file.

Do a search on "linux .profile" (note the dot in front of "profile"). Look for ways to set the PS1 and PS2 prompts.
