What do i burn as an iso For yellow dog linux?

Q. I downloaded yellow dog linux iso and it is a compressed .rar file. Inside this there is a folder called Yellowdog it contains 3.6 gb of the overall 3.66gb. to burn this do i just drag this folder onto my disk drive when i have a dvd inside?

A. Ok to open the file you need something like ultra iso or magic iso, or just google search something which can burn iso and open them.
Once you get your program, open it, add your file and burn on to cd/dvd.

Very easy

PS. If you use torrents just download ultra iso or magic iso of a torrent website....

A. no you need a ISO burning capable software such as nero or image burner

Can I burn more than one ISO (bootable operating system) on a DVD and still boot all of them?
Q. I don't happen to have a CD-ROM right now and I have DVD-ROMs instead and planning to burn more than one Linux ISO on it. Will it work and still boot all of them? I'm guessing I might need to use an ISO modifier to change the the kernel path for every ISO.

A. you can burn CD's(700mb disk) in a DVD burner

How to remove "linux mint" from my Win7 GRUB screen?

Q. I recently ran linux mint form a usb drive, but I decided that I don't like it. Ever since, as soon as I power on my computer, I have to choose to boot into Windows 7 or Linux mint. Some tutorials I saw required a repair disk to boot into command prompt, which I don't have. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

A. What you need to do is rebuild the BCD Store.
That is where that message is coming from.
It is sort of the new and improved bootloader starting
AFTER XP.
That can be a complex process, so lets go at this the
way you already were.

EVERY Win7 system will allow you you to make a "Win7 Repair Disk".
Note it is only for repairs, very important ones, (but somewhat small repairs.)

How do I go about installing windows after linux is already on my hard drive?

I am new to Ubuntu Linux where should I start?
Q. I installed an old copy of ubuntu linux 6 and I am fairly new to it. I would like to know where to find programs for ubuntu, how to install them, how to troubleshoot some minor problems (such as getting the Internet to work) etc. Is there a good website for this sort of stuff?

A. Ubuntu 6.10 is no longer supported. You can get it up and running with a little extra work but why make it hard for yourself.

Take a look at Linux Mint 5 (Main Edition) its easy to install easy to use and has much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled.

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 5 then you need to create a Bootable CD from the ISO. This can easily be done using Nero Burning ROM or similar software. Linux Mint 5 can also be run straight from the LiveCD you have created without touching your Hard Drive.

An alternative release of Ubuntu worth looking at is 8.04.2 http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04/ The installation tutorial I have supplied above also applies to Ubuntu 8.04.2

How do install mpeg decoders and flash for linux fedora 10?

Q. I am completely new to linux fedora and linux for that matter. I am running fedora from a live usb until i get these issues fixed. I apparently need to install mpeg decoders, xvid decoders, avi decoders and a flash player. Being a complete noob to linux I don't know how to go about this.

A. It looks like the decoders are not patent free and fedora will not include them. Other linux distros do allow a user to install them if they wish at their own risk.

You should search the fedora foum for more info on the codecs.

whats the point of booting linux as a live disto if you cant save?
Q. ive been reading about multiboot and i was wondering, whats the point of loading linux as a live usb if you cant save your stuff?

A. Using the built in linux features. I use it for many different things from hard drive recovery, file access behind a password locked windows, and quite a few networking things.

is it okay to install an OS onto a usb flash drive?
Q. I am planning to install Ubuntu linux onto a flash drive, but I heard that flash drives have a limited number of read/write cycles?
Oh, and it is not a standard installation. I am creating a persistent live usb of ubuntu 8.10, not a "real" install. Will I have any problems with my flash drive failing?

A. It seems really weird installing an OS onto a USB flash drive. Nor do I see how it works. Would it even have the correct amount of memory space?
I'd just buy another hard drive. A little portable one ^-^ Because all the memory you'll be using on that OS will just probably try and use up more space on the flash drive. Where as on the hard drive its more better to use and you have plenty of memory and not forgetting Hard Drives are made for an OS not really USB flash drives.

What's the best software to make simple 3d images ?

How do i switch web browsers if im using linux?
Q. My browser is currently bing (its horrible) But i don't know how to switch it i checked tools for internet options but its not there im currently using the latest linux Software.

A. As stated directly above me, Bing is not a browser, it's a search engine. To change that, you would need into the about:config in firefox and change the search engine, you can find tutorials through google(Which I recommend). As for browsers, I assume you are using Ubuntu. If so, simply "apt-get install browserpackagename" Replacing browserpackagename with the package name of the browser, of course. You may need sudo to do so, if not, go root with "sudo -i", I believe. To uninstall a browser do the same, except "apt-get remove"

Where do I download the latest version of iPod linux to be installed from an IBM compatible?
Q. I am looking for the latest version of iPod linux to be installed from an IBM compatible onto an iPod Classic, which according to Wikipedia will run up to iPod Classic, generation 6. Can you provide a link(s) where I can download the installer, preferably one with a grub or multi-boot, so that I can leave the factory installed Apple software as well. I would also interested in links to Linux software which would run on this version of iPod linux.

A. It looks like you are trying to use your iPod as a computer and that's not what it was designed for. I don't know of anybody who has ever done what you are trying to achieve.

How do I convert my musical technology on my laptop into hardware?

Q. I have a linux laptop with synthesizers, loopers, etc. The laptop is a pain in the ass and 70% of the time I spend with it is troubleshooting. I was wondering if anybody has or had a setup with a looper, synthesiser, and drum machine that is all hardware. I also need to know where to find these. I am also not quite sure about something else: Would a midi keyboard work with a hardware synthesiser and looper. Much appreciation if this question is answered.

A. There are several stand-alone sequencers like the Yamaha QY series. Also, several beat boxes like Korg's Electribe series will output midi data which allows them to be used as both a source of sounds and a sequencer for other drum machines.

I too do not like using laptops live (although I have.) Too many thing to go wrong. If you do end up using a laptop, keep it simple with only a midi sequencer running (like Cakewalk, Cubase, Sonar, etc.) Once you get softsynths running, you're maximizing CPU and memeory resources and running the risk of a crash.

As far as loopers, there are several stand-alone models like the Boss LoopStation. Synthesizer workstation like the Roland Fantom or Yamaha Motif will also play loops, although those types of keyboards are very expensive.

How do I swith operating systems on my laptop?
Q. My friend gave me an Ubuntu/Linux laptop but on the side of it it says Windows Vista. Does that mean It used to be Windows and if so how can I change it back. Please help, I really hate using Linux, it's a piece of trash.

A. Linux is great if you know what you are doing, and it isn't hard to figure out. If you must, though, then there are two possibilities for getting Windows back on it.

1. Ask if it is dual partitioned. If it is, then when you turn it on, when it is still in the BIOS it will give you an option briefly for which system to load. Select Windows and you will load up no problem.

2. If it not dual partitioned you will have to use a Windows OS disk. Those can be about $100+ unless your friend has one.

If you don't like Ubuntu you can try Linux Mint or some other nice operating system for free. Different versions of Linux run different and you might like another version better. You could also Google "free non linux OS" or something of the sort.


If you post your main problem with Ubuntu under additional details, I will recommend something further.

Are you suppose to use different linux distros if you have different purposes?

Q. Or can all linux distro do almost the same if you know the terminal command or scripts? For example if i wanted to do some penetration test with back track but i want to surf the wow anonymously with incognito? Do i have to do them seperately or can i kinda combine them together in one.

A. Terminal commands in almost all Linux distributions are the same commands. Penetration Testing (Forensic) Linux distributions do not make a very good desktop, for everyday use. It doesn't make very much sense to do it on your own hard drive. In most Linux distributions, I believe in the package management program you can find anonymous browsing software to install. And yes one Linux in general can be over bloated with software to your desire.

What linux Distro should i use for my old PC?
Q. Okay so i've got a old pc.

I've basically put windows 98 on steroids, it has 3 hard drives like 512 MB ram. It's a pentium 3.

so what linux distro should i use.

ps it was originally for windows 2k runs windows XP great.

A. Im running Ubuntu on my old Compaq 1200 notebook 300mb RAM, 500mhz processor, It actually runs pretty good, Im sure your P3 is running at least 1.1ghz so I think Ubuntu is the best OS for you also seeing as Ubuntu has the most drivers of anything built in, you shouldn't have problems with this distro

Is there a way to download linux without a disk drive?

Q. I got this new laptop (ultra portable) without a disk drive. I remember hearing ti was possible to get linux running with a flash drive but, what I want to know is if it's possible to download linux with it (dual boot). If not is there any other way? I'm using an Ubuntu like distro.

A. You have at least 2 options: use unetbootin (see link below) and use an usb drive. or use wubi to download ubuntu to your computer and install from there.

Q. I have an extremely old Windows laptop that can't go on the internet (it's modem doesn't work). I want to download Linux on it in order to see how the operating system works.

Is it possible to upload Linux to a CD and download it that way? If so, can someone tell me how?

A. Download an ISO image distribution and install it on a CD. Many distributions come with a live CD package that allows you to run the Linux OS from the CD drive without messing with your Windows installation. You might want to try an older version of Linux if the notebook is not up to speed. SimplyMEPIS (MEPIS.org) is a good combination of software that includes apps OpenOffice and stuff. I would download one of the older distributions like 7.0 or 6.5 for an older PC.
